A harmonized rating system is now used by VisitBritain and the AA. These ratings are a clear guide to what you can expect from accommodation, before you book. Properties are visited annually by trained and impartial assessors.

HOTELS:  
Assessed using stars by VisitBritain and the AA. Rating is from 1 to 5 stars - the more stars, the higher the quality and greater the range of facilities and levels of service.

GUEST ACCOMMODATION:  
Assessed using stars by VisitBritain and AA. One to five stars indicating a progressively higher level of quality and service. A further designator is used to indicate the style that can be expected includes guest house, guest accommodation, B&B, inns and farmhouses. The number of stars is based on cleanliness, guest care, bedroom comfort, bathroom facilities and the standard of food.

SELF CATERING:  
Assessed using stars from VisitBritain. One to five stars indicate progressively higher standards.

HOLIDAY, TOURING & CAMPING PARKS:    or  
One to five stars, assessed by VisitBritain, one to five pennants, assessed by the AA.
